RAFA: I’LL MAKE DOM EVEN DEADLIER

- BY CHRIS McKENNA

RAFA BENITEZ believes Dominic Calvert-Lewin can beat last season’s goal tally.

And the Everton boss reckons that he will make him an even better striker.

Benitez has already spoken about providing more service for the Toffees marksman, who notched 21 goals last season – 16 in the Premier League.

Calvert-Lewin overcame a toe injury to start Saturday’s win over Southampton and headed home the third goal (below) in a 3-1 victory. “He has the attributes to score a lot of goals,” said Benitez.

“He scored 16 last year and I think he can score more because he is more mature and the way we want to play will benefit him. He has a problem with his toe but wants to train, then we will be sure when he is fully fit, that he can do what we want.

“He will have chances and score goals. “It is difficult to say the extent of his potential. I need to spend more time talking with him and training with him on the pitch, to be sure he understands the little things we can improve.

“We have been talking about a couple of small things that I think he will be keen on doing on the pitch.

“Simple things, attack the near post, the body position when he starts running or moving.”

Benitez’s side, who face Leeds tomorrow, put 18 crosses into the area last weekend – up six from their average of 12 under former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

And Benitez is confident Calvert-Lewin can reap the benefit of the change in approach, adding: “The main thing for me will be to ensure we provide him with the right passes and crosses, then he will score.”
