BISCUIT WEAK..
Tears & shipwrecks on Bake Off
YOU have to be a tough cookie to get through Biscuit Week on The Great British Bake Off.
In last night’s show Maggie burst into tears and Amanda suffered her second collapsing showstopper – but it was Jairzeno who left.
The laid-back finance manager, 51, struggled with just about everything.
He ran out of time in his first task with his brandy snaps, which judge Prue Leith said were “too strong”.
Jairzeno, who started baking a decade ago, then produced some dodgy jammy dodgers in the technical task, finishing ninth.
But it was his Tall Ship interactive toy showstopper, with broken masts, which failed to float the judges’ boat. “It’s more of a shipwreck than a ship,” he admitted. The judges branded it “rough and ready”.
Jairzeno, originally from Trinidad, said later: “The mast on my boat fell down and I lost a sail, so it didn’t look great. I kind of knew there and then it was time to go.
“In the future I will make biscuits that don’t involve engineering.” Met Police detective Amanda, 56, had thought it might be her turn, saying: “Mine’s the only one that collapsed so I think my chances of staying are slim.” Judge Paul Hollywood said her carousel horse could have been “the best we’ve ever had” but added: “I’d never have chosen that biscuit to build this.” Tearful ex-nurse Maggie, 70, whose beach-hut showstopper was dubbed “too basic”, said: “Everybody is so much more skilful.”
Paul told her: “If you were looking at a traditional school report, it would say ‘needs to try harder’.”
