Off judge Paul Hollywood, 55, has revealed that the theme, featured in an episode which has been recorded but not yet shown, was a big success.

He said: “We did a German week which is an unusual one.

“And that was actually very good. They were classic bakes and it was fascinating.” Fellow judge Prue Leith, 81, said it had been “very interesting”.

The recipes included a German yeasted cake.

Keen trombonist Jürgen, originally from the Black Forest in south west Germany, is steaming ahead in the Channel 4 baking competition thanks to his calm attitude, great flavours and excellent engineering skills.

He has been so good that Italian contestant Giuseppe has nicknamed him the Baking Terminator, after the cyborg played in sci-fi movies by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Jürgen, who lives in Brighton, East Sussex, has impressed so far with efforts such as his gravity-defying bedtime reading showstopper.

■ The Great British Bake Off is on Channel 4 on Tuesday at 8pm.
