You can see how trust’s now eroded to nothing

- SENIOR LAW LECTURER, UNIVERSITY OF EXETER

THERE’S already a massive problem for women and the justice system in terms of betrayal and lack of trust.

Very few women want to report sexual violence.

Very few cases are charged and the conviction rate for rape is extraordinarily low.

If you add the fact this was a serving police officer, you can see how the trust is eroding to basically nothing.

The fact he used his police power to arrest her, how is any woman going to feel safe if they are approached by police?

The Sarah Everard case makes all women fear being on the streets. Even if they call for help they can’t trust a policeman from now on.

The Government has been saying “let’s have more CCTV and lighting” but that did not deter him. He was caught on camera.

I think the message the sentence sends is really important. This is saying this person is so dangerous he is not eligible for release.

What are police going to do about their own? How are they going to vet and train colleagues to look for misogynistic attitudes?

Violence against women happens all the time.

We shouldn’t be led to think that women should be responsible for their safety.

What could have been done about him and men who rape and kill women?

We have to look at misogyny and the belief that men are superior to women in society.
