Crash drunk slept as his pal lay dying
A “DESPICABLE” drunk driver, who crashed his van then went to sleep instead of calling 999 for his dying passenger, has been jailed.
Paul Bennett, 46, was three times the legal limit when he hit a tree.
He knew pal Simon Maving, 49, was seriously hurt but instead of seeking help he climbed into the back of the van for a nap.
Bennett, of Bridlington, East Yorks, was jailed for eight years seven months after admitting causing death when unfit through drink at North Grimston, North Yorks.
After the case at York crown court, Sergeant Adam Elliott called Bennett’s actions inexcusable.
He added: “The fact he went to sleep instead of calling for help is even more despicable.”
