Cries & dolls with The Repair Shop

-

The new series of BBC1’s The Repair Shop on Wednesday saw me smash my previous blubbing record.

I was welling up within the first five minutes thanks to Jay Blades introducing us to 36-year-old Special Olympian Jess Hiles who’d had life-saving heart surgery when she was just 12 days old.

When Jess was five, her grandma gave her a doll called David. Jess later added Amy, and they became her constant companions.

Jess wanted Jay’s toy team to restore them to their former glory in honour of her devoted nan who, we discovered, had recently passed away.

Needless to say, the subsequent unveiling was one of the most joyful and life-affirming pieces of TV you could ever wish to see.

I did have one question though. When Jay’s team posed up David and Amy, why did they make it look like someone had just shouted: “Stick em up – this is a raid!”?
