Fan’s cardiac arrest halts Prem match
Stars rush to help stricken supporter
A PREMIER League game was halted yesterday when a fan suffered a cardiac arrest.
The supporter was given CPR at St James’ Park as Newcastle United lost 3-2 to Tottenham Hotspur in their first match since the Saudi-backed takeover of the club.
At around 41 minutes into the game, the stricken fan was seen having his heart pumped in the lower tier of the East Stand.
Spurs and England defender Eric Dier, 27, ran to the team dug-outs and appeared to call for a defibrillator as United supporters close to the emergency shouted for help.
His team-mate Sergio Reguilon brought the incident to the attention of referee Andre Marriner who suspended play.
Newcastle’s club doctor, Paul Catterson, raced across the pitch with a life-saving device.
The stunned sell-out 52,000 crowd, including former Newcastle University student Princess Eugenie,
TV stars Ant and Dec and new United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan looked on as medics attended to the man.
The teams left the field and the fan, believed to be in his 70s, was put on a stretcher after around 20 minutes’ treatment. He was taken to hospital and said to be awake, responsive and talking.
Ex-Newcastle and Spurs star
David Ginola, who suffered a heart attack during a charity game in 2016, was working as a pundit. He said: The defibrillator helps, the fans in the stands performing CPR helps massively. We all should be able to perform CPR.” DEFIBRILLATORS
The Mirror is campaigning to SAVE ensure defibrillators LIVES are legally required at locations like schools and sports grounds. After the match Spanish defender Reguilon said: “I saw the fan lying down and I was so nervous. The guy is stable and that’s the most important thing.”
