MORECAMBE HAVE THE LAST LAUGH

Cole on fire as Shrimps storm back after looking Don & dusted

-

COLE STOCKTON led Morecambe’s stunning second-half comeback as they fought back to overturn a three-goal half-time deficit.

Doncaster appeared set for a first away win of the season when they took control of the game in the opening half-hour.

Aidan Barlow fired the visitors ahead after just seven minutes before Dan Gardner and Joseph Olowu struck to leave the home side in deep trouble.

But two goals from Stockton brought the Shrimps back into the game. Jon Obika fired them level before Toumani Diagouraga struck a longrange winner five minutes from time.

The win hands Morecambe a timely boost ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup trip to Tottenham – but boss Stephen Robinson admitted the rollercoaster victory left him with mixed emotions. He said: “In one way, I’m raging with the defending, but delighted with the boys’ character.

“At half-time, I didn’t rant and rave because I felt we were passing the ball for the first time in six weeks.

“I said to them, ‘Keep passing the ball, you’ll get a goal and they will crumble’ but it’s credit to the boys.

“They showed composure, we didn’t go long – but we can’t play long, we haven’t got anyone who wins headers and is physical. I’m delighted for them. It’s a big result and shows we’re a good football side who can’t defend at the minute, so we have to change that to stay in this division.”

Stockton started the comeback when he moved on to Anthony O’Connor’s 52ndminute knockdown to claim his 17th goal of the season.

The forward struck again in the 74th minute before Obika turned in Greg Leigh’s 83rdminute shot.

And Diagouraga wrapped up an astonishing win in style with a 25-yard strike two minutes later.
