High-flying Robins eye Cup shock
SWINDON boss Ben Garner says his side will head into Friday’s FA Cup showdown with Manchester City with their sights set on a thirdround upset.
Harry McKirdy’s four-goal haul helped the Robins blitz secondplaced Northampton.
And Garner says the performance gives them the ideal lift before going toe to toe with Pep Guardiola’s Premier League leaders. The manager (right) said: “I think it is a big help and we can look forward to the Man City game with four points this week and on the back of a great win.
“We’re now going to take on currently the best team in England and one of the top three in the world. It will be fantastic occasion against some of the world’s best players and, in my opinion, the best manager in the world. We are looking forward to it.
“It is a fantastic challenge for us. “We want to win the game. We know how difficult that will be and we know we are going to have to be at 100 percent in our performance levels right across the pitch – that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”
McKirdy’s opener was cancelled out by
Sam Hoskins before the visitors took the lead through Jon Guthrie. But three more from the in-form Londoner McKirdy (right) and a Tyreece Simpson strike completed the win.
Garner said: “I thought both Harry and Tyreece were outstanding. And I think that takes them both to double figures now which is a fantastic return. I’m delighted with the pair of them.” Cobblers had put together a run of four straight wins so Saturday’s result came as something of a shock. Manager Jon Brady said: “We haven’t had the whole group together. It’s been very stop-start with everybody but we will be better for this game and it was important that the substitutes got a good run-out as well.”
