COMEDIAN David Baddiel has sparked outrage by smearing cranberry sauce on a scone.

The 57-year-old also managed to offend Cornish people who insist the cream goes on scones last.

Baddiel posted a snap of his snack on Instagram with the caption: “A lack of jam in the house means I’m having a scone with cranberry sauce. So sue me.”

But while his post turned many Brits’ stomachs, some praised his unusual delicacy as “delicious, inventive and classy”.

Here are some other ways to use the versatile Christmas leftover…

Gorgeous gravy:

Jamie Oliver uses two tablespoons of cranberry sauce in his gravy recipe.

Transform yoghurt: Turn a plain yoghurt into a fruity one by adding one spoonful (or more).

Create pink whipped cream:

Whip cream until it forms stiff peaks.

Fold the cream into the cranberry sauce and use to top cake or hot chocolate.

Glaze meat:

As well as turkey, cranberry sauce also goes with chicken, pork and beef. Bake chicken breasts or pork chops then brush with cranberry sauce five minutes before they’re done.

Tasty crostini: Toast slices of a baguette until crisp, then let cool. Top with softened cream cheese or goats’ cheese, then a bit of cranberry sauce, fresh orange zest, fresh thyme leaves and crack on some black pepper.

Add cranberry sauce as a relish to your cheeseboard: Smooth it on cheese and crackers or on top of baked Brie or Camembert by adding it for the last five minutes in the oven.

Use in smoothies: A dollop in your favourite fruit smoothie before blitzing it in a blender adds a sweet, tangy taste.

Top pancakes: Works perfectly with fluffy pancakes and a dash of powdered sugar. Salad dressing: A bit of blitzed cranberry sauce gives a tangy twist to balsamic or red wine vinaigrette. Top a cheesecake:

Scoops of sweet and tart cranberry on a cheesecake will banish your weight loss aims. Pigs in blankets:

Celeb cook Nigel Slater makes sticky cranberry sausages by cooking them with red onions, cranberry jelly, fresh or frozen cranberries, orange zest and olive oil. Top a bagel:

Spread a toasted bagel or muffin with cream cheese and cranberry sauce. Healthy ice lollies: Take 250g cranberry sauce, two tablespoons of pure maple syrup and 150g of non-fat Greek yoghurt and blitz in a blender. Spoon the mixture into lolly moulds and freeze for at least four hours.
