Winter bites as snow and ice hit north
SEVERE weather warnings for snow and ice have gone out for northern England and Scotland today.
The Met Office yellow alerts cover Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, Merseyside, Yorkshire and Scotland between 10am and 4pm, with freezing conditions in the evening and wintry showers tomorrow.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “In some of the sheltered glens in Scotland we could see minus 10C or even colder.
“Across the UK there are not going to be many places that will remain above freezing.”
Forecasters say there may be up to 5cm of snow disrupting travel on higher routes as strong winds cause drifts, before milder weather at the weekend.
