MEG’S £1 DAMAGES IN PRIVACY BATTLE
But wins big copyright sum
THE Duchess of Sussex will be paid just £1 in damages for breach of privacy from her multi-million-pound case against a newspaper.
The nominal sum is set out in court documents that confirm the Mail on Sunday and MailOnline will not be taking the long-running case to a Supreme Court appeal. Publisher Associated
Newspapers Limited will also pay an unspecified sum for infringing Meghan’s copyright by publishing large parts of a letter she wrote to her father Thomas Markle, 77.
A spokesman for Meghan, 40, said this second sum was substantial and would go to charity. Meghan sued ANL in 2018 for invasion of privacy and breach of copyright. A High Court judge ruled in her favour last year without a full trial.
In an apology published on Boxing Day, the Mail on Sunday said: “Financial remedies have been agreed.” Retired libel lawyer David Hooper said that as ANL had agreed to cover a substantial part of Meghan’s legal costs, she had not only won her point of principle but also “inflicted significant financial damage” on the publisher.
But he added: “She may well still be half a million pounds out of pocket.”
