Boaty to join £37m glacier melt mission
BOATY McBoatface has been called up to chart a “Doomsday Glacier” the size of Britain for critical climate change research.
The submersible, named following an online poll to christen a ship that was later called the RRS Sir David Attenborough, will cover territory beneath Thwaites Glacier.
It spans 74,000 square miles in the Antarctic and its melting accounts for 4% of global sea level rise.
It is feared it may add an extra 65cm over centuries.
Scientists from the UK, Sweden and the US will take part in the trip, part of a £37million mission.
Prof Karen Heywood said: “We will deploy two robots to collect detailed data that will enable us to understand what will happen in the future.”
