Biden attacks loser Trump’s ‘big lie’
JOE Biden marked the first anniversary of the Capitol riots by attacking Donald Trump and saying the US is in a “battle for the soul of America”.
The President said his predecessor had sown a “web of lies” and sat idly as his rabid supporters tried to overturn the 2020 result.
Inside the Capitol, which was ransacked a year ago, he accused twice-impeached Trump of seeking to illegally stay in power.
Biden said: “He refused to accept the results of an election. He’s not just a former president. He’s the defeated former president. He lost by seven million of your votes.”
Along with vice president Kamala Harris, Biden vigorously denounced Trump and his allies who sent a mob to the Capitol.
DEMOCRACY
He said: “You can’t love your country only when you win.
“Those who instigated and incited held a dagger to the throat of American democracy.”
Biden said Trump cast doubt before voting started, deciding the only way to win was to suppress the vote and subvert democracy.
At least seven deaths were linked to the January 6 insurrection, dozens more were injured and hundreds of workers in the Capitol were shaken and traumatised.
Biden said: “I know how difficult democracy is and I’m crystal clear about the threats America faces, but I also know that our darkest days can lead to light and hope from the death and destruction.”
He said claims the election result had been inaccurate was another lie and Trump had “zero proof ”.
He asked why Trump and his supporters were able to accept election results from
November 2020, in which their choices for governor and members of Congress were elected.
Biden also attacked Trump and the Republican party for a year-long campaign to whitewash the riot and to promote a “big lie” that the election was stolen from him. Biden’s address came as Democrats pushed for voting rights reforms to protect and expand access to the polls.
Congress is also looking at new laws to prevent future attempts to subvert democracy, with the goal of passing legislation this year.
Trump said Biden’s attack was an attempt to “deflect the incompetent job he is doing” by focusing America’s attention on the anniversary
