LEEDS: KEEP KIDS OFF PITCH OR GET BANNED

- BY DAVID McDONNELL BY JEREMY CROSS

Solskjaer, who suffered same fate last November.

The churn of managers under Woodward is alien to United, given the long and successful tenures of Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby, the failure to get the right man in charge for a consistent spell – Guardiola is in his sixth season at City, Klopp in his seventh at Liverpool – being the key factor in the club’s inability to challenge for the big prizes.

When Solskjaer was appointed, the club talked of a “cultural reset” under their former striker, but that move failed, with the Red Devils no nearer to challenging for the title than they were when Woodward took over.

What will his United legacy be? A savvy commercial operator whose business expertise kept United’s revenues strong.

But one whose lack of football acumen, and failure to delegate to those with greater knowledge and understanding of the game, ultimately compounded a sharp decline that continues to beset the country’s most successful club. the

NEW Manchester United chief Richard Arnold will be less involved on the football side than Ed Woodward.

United managing director Arnold will succeed Woodward on February 1, taking over from his colleague and friend.

Arnold wants to operate differently to his predecessor, who was “hands-on” with regard to football operations at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old Arnold will give more autonomy to football director John Murtough, technical director Darren Fletcher and interim boss Ralf Rangnick, who will begin a two-year consultancy role at the end of this season.

Within United, Arnold (above) was a major driver in establishing the football director and technical director appointments last year, as well as offering Rangnick the consultancy role.

Under the new structure, football decisions will be led by Murtough, with help from Fletcher, working closely alongside Rangnick and a permanent boss, who will be appointed to take charge for next season.

Arnold joined United in 2007 as commercial director, responsible for the management and growth of sponsorship, retail, merchandising, licensing and digital media. successor as United’s new chief executive officer. Woodward is leaving Old Trafford after originally tendering his resignation in April over the doomed European Super League project.

And Woodward, who has worked with Arnold for 15 years, has told his colleague he must get the next managerial appointment right.

Ronaldo, 36, would not support the full-time employment of interim-chief Ralf Rangnick, who is expected to become United’s ‘senior football advisor’ next term.

With United 22 points behind Premier League leaders and rivals Manchester City, Ronaldo’s homecoming has not gone to plan.

Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers are in the frame for the United job. And a source said: “Ronaldo thought it would be better than this. He’s a born winner and wants to win more trophies. Who the next manager is will help him decide his next move.”

United finish fourth to qualify for the Champions League, but a woeful summer window sees Anthony Martial, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay signed.

Van Gaal leads United to FA Cup glory, their first trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down, but is sacked the next day, replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho leads United to League Cup and Europa League success, the latter qualifying for the Champions League, after finishing sixth in the Premier League.

United finish second, 19 points behind Manchester City, which Mourinho considers one of his greatest achievements. But he does not get the players he wants in the summer and is sacked in December. Woodward angers fans when he says: “Playing performance doesn’t really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business.”

Caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is handed the job full time, but fails to launch a credible title bid or win a trophy. Woodward caught on camera supposedly reprimanding Phil Jones, who appears to say “sacked in the morning” sat in the stands in front of him after Solskjaer’s United are beaten at West Ham.

Woodward tenders resignation after United’s involvement in the doomed European Super League project, while his house is targeted by violent protesters. Thousands of United fans, angry at the ESL proposal and the Glazers’ ownership, storm Old Trafford, forcing the league game against Liverpool to be called off. Woodward sacks Solskjaer, the fourth boss he has axed in eight years, replacing him with interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

United confirm Woodward’s exit for February 1, replaced by the Reds’ managing director Richard Arnold.

LEEDS have promised to issue one-year bans to parents who allow their children on to the pitch after games at Elland Road.

In recent weeks, young supporters have ran onto the pitch at the final whistle to speak to stars and collect souvenirs.

But with the Omicron variant forcing swathes of games to be postponed, Leeds have put their foot down.

United issued a statement reminding supporters that “encroachment on the pitch is a criminal offence”, and promised those parents/guardians who flaunt the rules will be hit with a 12-month ban.

Leeds said of the incidents with young fans: “This will not be tolerated whether before, during or after a game.”
