Worries over Tesco’s jobs as counters face the axe

- BY GRAHAM HISCOTT Head of Business

TESCO is to close meat, fish and hot deli counters in 317 stores and ditch its Jack’s budget chain.

The supermarket giant has singled out counters in stores where it said there was the least demand.

They will remain in another 279 branches.

Bosses claimed there would be no redundancies as a result, with staff offered alternative roles.

But it did not disclose how many staff would be affected and whether they might have to take a pay cut by moving internally.

SUPPORT

Tesco said the closure of seven of the 13 stores in the standalone Jack’s chain would affect 130 staff, plus head office roles. Again, Tesco said they would be offered other positions.

Named after Tesco founder Jack Cohen, Jack’s was launched in 2018 to take on Aldi and Lidl.

Six Jack’s stores will now become Tesco superstores.

Daniel Adams, of shopworkers’ union Usdaw, said: “Clearly this will be incredibly unsettling for those who may be affected.

“Usdaw will do all we can to support members.”
