THE GILDED AGE

American Downton continues as Marian, played by Meryl Streep’s daughter Louisa Jacobson, settles in at her new New York City home.

She has decided to involve herself with a charity bazaar, but the ladies are not keen to include the nouveau riche Russells.

Marian is not afraid to confront them, pointing out that if the Russells have more money than anyone else, then why not invite Bertha (Carrie Coon)?

“Money isn’t everything,” says one woman. “It is when you haven’t got it,” retorts Marian.

Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel), the dashing young lawyer from Pennsylvania, has managed to find an excuse to visit Marian in New York.

The timing is good as Peggy (Denee Benton) needs some legal advice.

There’s drama downstairs when the cook owes some money and turns to nicking the candlesticks.

And there are some excellent withering comments from Agnes (Christine Baranski), the best being: “I am not concerned with facts, not if they interfere with my beliefs.”
