Muamba: I wish Chris all the best , but I am worried

- INTERVIEW: JOHN CROSS

FABRICE MUAMBA became an inspiration after suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch at White Hart Lane in 2012 (above). The former Bolton midfielder’s heart stopped beating for 78 minutes and yet he fought his way back to health and a normal way of life. But while he wishes Christian Eriksen every success, he still has major concerns.

There would be no one happier than me to see Christian Eriksen make a successful comeback.

I wish him all the best, all the luck in the world, hope everything works out well – but my biggest hope is that he stays safe. He is so brave, so humble and I wish him nothing but the best.

But for now, it seems I’m the bad guy for bringing out the bad news. It’s not that. I’m just worried about him. That’s all. Nothing more.

If you speak to anyone in the medical profession they will say it’s safe – but deep down it will be a concern. Of course it will be. I just hope it works out for him and his family.

No matter how many minutes he plays, five, 10, half-anhour, my only worry is that he stays healthy. That’s all I want.

I would love to sit down and talk to him myself. Just have a conversation. It’s so brave of him and I’d just love to talk, find out what’s going on in his head.

I reached out to his agent and he never responded but I would love to hear his thoughts and what’s gone through his mind. I’m sure the time will come when we can do that.

At the top level, especially in the Premier League, you hope that all the safety measures are in place and his safety must be the only priority. But if he was your son, my son, we wouldn’t even have this conversation.

Some players are playing with an ICD (implantable cardioverterdefibrillator) and they can do that in safety or with some difficulties, but they want to play on. Listen, I was “out” longer than Christian Eriksen so we’re different. In fact, every case is different.

People talk about Daley Blind and how he has come back and played in Holland. But they don’t have the same intensity of the Premier League. Everything here is 70 or 80 miles per hour.

I go to the gym. But me going to the gym, I’m probably walking level five, pick up a couple of weights and that’s it. But in terms of going on the treadmill, being super fit at level 15… no chance.

It’s the same as going into a relegation scrap against Burnley when they’re trying to close you down.

I just hope it works out for Christian. But most importantly, I want him to be safe.
