World Cup winner signs for Shrewsbury pub side Brazil ace Roberto Carlos to play Sunday league game
BRAZILIAN football legend Roberto Carlos is set to play for a pub team in Shrewsbury.
The World Cup winner has signed for the club to turn out in a Sunday league game next month.
Carlos, who was at Real Madrid with David Beckham, will play on a park pitch in Shropshire for Bull in the Barne United who won his services in a charity raffle.
The left-back, 48, said: “I’ve heard the team’s been down a number of players this season, so here’s hoping my training is enough to help them up their game and bring what [their] fans want to see.”
Carlos, who won 125 caps for Brazil and lifted the World Cup in 2002, scored what is hailed as the greatest ever free kick – a 40-yard banana shot against France in 1997.
Bull in the Barne goalie Ed Speller said: “It should be a right laugh... with some tense free kicks and hopefully no dodgy tackles.” Carlos, who retired in 2015, was signed for £5 as part of eBay’s Dream Transfer raffle, as was former England Lionesses striker Eni Aluko who will play a game for grassroots side Pevensey and Westham FC in East Sussex. Aluko, 34, said: “I’m so excited.” One of the players Madeleine Gorman said: “Hopefully we’re in for our first win of the season.” The raffle was in aid of Football Beyond Borders which helps poor kids.
