Gong for a stroll
Fundraiser walks 250 miles to get MBE at Windsor
A PERSONAL trainer has told how he walked 250 miles to collect his MBE and was ordered to celebrate with a tipple by Prince Charles.
Mike Hind was handed the gong by Charles yesterday at Windsor Castle for delivering food and essentials to vulnerable families during the pandemic.
He decided to make the journey by foot to raise money for the armed forces charity SSAFA.
Mike, 38, said: “It was just something I wanted to do to show my appreciation for what I’ve got.”
And Charles was so impressed with his determination to complete the 20-day walk, he suggested he celebrate with a whisky after the ceremony.
Mike added: “He knew about the walk, he congratulated me and said that it’s a great cause and he’d never heard of anyone else who had done it before.
“And then he said, ‘You’ve earned a whisky, so go home and have one.’
“I don’t drink whisky but if Prince
Charles says to have one, then I’ll do as I’m told.” Mike’s walk from his home town of Middlesbrough, North Yorks, raised more than £26,400, beating his original target of £25,000.
The father-of-three was joined by his family and friends for the final four-mile stretch at the weekend.
But his hopes of relaxing in style when he arrived were dashed. Mike said: “We booked a hotel specifically with a spa but we turned up and it was closed, so I had my feet in the sink.”
Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio, 55, was also at Windsor, to collect an OBE. But he declined to say whether the popular police corruption drama would be making a return soon. He said: “If that happens, I guess we’ll tell people.”
Kim Leadbeater, 45, the sister of murdered MP Jo Cox, received an MBE.
She said getting the award was “bittersweet” but added: “Jo would be incredibly proud of everything that we’ve done in her name.”
