3 more Tories want PM to go
Johnson blasted for his ‘mistruths’
LETTER
THREE more Conservative MPs have submitted letters of no confidence in Boris Johnson over the Partygate row. Former minister Tobias Ellwood was first out of the blocks yesterday, saying of the scandal: “This is horrible for MPs to continuously have to defend to the public.” Anthony Mangnall, MP for Totnes in Devon, followed suit, saying the PM’s “actions and mistruths are overshadowing the extraordinary work of so many excellent ministers and colleagues”. Sir Gary Streeter, MP for South West Devon, soon followed. He said: “I can’t reconcile the sacrifice of the public during lockdown with theactivities of those in Downing Street.” The number of letters needed to trigger a no confidence vote is creeping towards the 54 threshold. Over a dozen Tories have publicly told the PM to go. Others are threatening to put in letters unless he retracts his slurs about Labour leader Keir Starmer, the former Director of Public Prosecutions, failing to prosecute Jimmy Savile.
A Tory minister told the Mirror: “There will be a slow drip, drip of letters over the coming weeks until the Met finishes its inquiry. It’s going to be excruciating.” Sue Gray’s interim report slated “failures of leadership” over No10 lockdown parties. The PM is directly linked to six of the 12 gatherings being probed by Scotland Yard. Mr Starmer blasted Mr Johnson at PMQs for “lots of bluster, no answers”, adding: “That’s not going to work with the police.” pippa.crerar@mirror.co.uk
