MPs call for lockdown prosecutions review
CAMPAIGNERS, lawyers and MPs have called on Justice Secretary Dominic Raab to urgently review all coronavirus fines and prosecutions.
They claim there is “substantial evidence” that thousands of people have been wrongfully fined or even prosecuted under lockdown rules.
In a letter from campaign group Big Brother Watch and criminal justice watchdog Fair Trials, the signatories call for wrong or unlawful fines, prosecutions and convictions to be quashed.
Tory MPs David Davis and Steve Baker and Labour’s Baroness Chakrabarti and Jeremy Corbyn are among those backing the move.
Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, said: “It is an insult and grave injustice for innocent people who have found themselves wrongly criminalised, while allegations of law-breaking engulf Downing Street.”
The Ministry of Justice said the policy was overseen by the Home Office, which has been contacted for comment.
