Record breaking sea-flarers

-

NOVICE rowers Charlotte Harris and Jessica Oliver get all fired up after setting a new record for crossing the Atlantic.

Despite having no experience, the pals arrived in Antigua 45 days, seven hours after setting off from the Canary Islands.

That was five days faster than the previous best by a female pair – and five days quicker than their nearest rivals in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Rowing in two-hour shifts, they faced 30ft waves, the capsize of their vessel and even a collision.

On hitting land, Jessica, 29, of Dowdeswell, Glos, said: “We got off and our legs turned to jelly.”

Charlotte, 30, of Fleet, Hants, joked: “We’re still friends, despite weeks in a tiny boat.”
