MANCHESTER United’s Mason Greenwood was yesterday released on bail after being questioned over the alleged rape and assault of a young woman.

Two security guards were later posted at the gates of his Cheshire mansion and workers were also installing a CCTV system.

The footballer, 20, was arrested on Sunday. While in custody on Tuesday, he was further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill.

Greater Manchester Police yesterday confirmed that a man of 20 is out on bail “pending further investigation”. The forward has been suspended from playing or training with Man United until further notice.

Sports brand Nike has suspended its deal with Greenwood and Electronic Arts has removed him from active squads on its hit game FIFA 22.

Konami, the official gaming partner of Manchester United, said: “The player will be removed from our football titles. For PES 2021 on mobile, users cannot newly obtain the player but existing owners are unaffected.”

Man United’s official logistics partner, DHL, said: “Our partnership with Manchester United encompasses the team, not one individual.”

Manchester United FC has said that it condemns “violence of any kind”.

Police have issued a reminder that complainants of sexual offences have a legal right to anonymity for life and urged people not to make comments or share images online that could compromise that right.
