MARVEL ARCH

Cameron is on song in front of goal but not with the mic

RYAN LOWE isn’t clued up on US rappers, but the Preston boss knows a top-quality striker when he sees one.

And Lowe (right), scorer of more than 200 goals in his own career, is certain that Steven Gerrard has loaned him a future Premier League star in Cameron Archer.

There was ample evidence at Hull that Archer, 20, is the real deal, although he proved the previous evening he’s no rapper.

The recent arrival from Gerrard’s Aston Villa had to suffer a football tradition and perform in front of his new team-mates, and Archer admitted: “My singing isn’t the best. They forced me to do it and I hated it.”

Archer chose In Da Club by 50 Cent, which is news to Lowe.

“He’s a lovely kid, but his song was rubbish,” said Lowe. “I think it was a Biggie Smalls one.”

Lowe’s friendship with Gerrard dates back to their days together in the Liverpool youth system and helped him secure Archer for the rest of the season.

And Gerrard sent the striker to Deepdale with some words of advice. “He just said ‘go and smash it’ and hopefully I can continue doing that,” said Archer, tagged as Little Tevez by Villa fans because of his non-stop style.

“It’s flattering. I’ve been watching Carlos Tevez on YouTube recently and can pick up little things to add to my game.”

There was a hint of Tevez about Archer’s 51st-minute winner as he found space to instantly control Ben Whiteman’s pass and place a shot past keeper Matt Ingram.

“It’s what I’ve been doing in training,” said Archer (celebrating his goal, below). “I’m trying to be instinctive in and around the box. It’s about scoring goals for me. The

Championship is exciting and I’m learning every day. It’s a different experience to playing in the U23s. “It’s men against boys and you don’t want to be playing U23 football when you get a bit older.” Hull’s run of three wins without conceding a goal was ended by Archer. But only a remarkable point-blank save from Daniel Iversen prevented Tom Eaves giving the Tigers a first-half lead that might have altered the outcome. “Daniel starfished and it came back off him, which is a bit unfortunate for us,” said Hull’s Jacob Greaves. “It’s a bump in the road after our wins, but there is a lot of experience in the dressing room and we’ll pick ourselves up.”
