NAME THAT JINGLE
Following on from last week’s revelation that Bing Crosby sang advertising jingles, reader Andy Barr, from Leeds, recalls that our homegrown star Matt Monro, right, was the voice of many a jingle.
Andy, 65, says: “Matt Monro made at least nine advertising jingles, some of which I remember. I have them all on two compilation CDs. They are Babycham, British Rail, Pop Gear, Woolworths, Newport cigarettes, Teem (soft drink), Macleans toothpaste, Mackintosh’s Weekend and Zal disinfectant.
“I certainly remember, ‘That’s the wonder of Woolworth, that’s the wonder of good old Woolies, it’s a wonderland that builds a happy home, it’s a wonderland that is your very own, that’s the wonder of Woolworth, that’s the wonder of good old Woolies’.
“The British rail tag line was ‘Let the train take the strain’.
“The Woolworth and British rail jingles were actually almost full-length songs, of which snippets must have been taken for the TV.”
