Evil Putin threat risks world war

- Ray Arpino, Berkeley, Glos

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin has now threatened massive repercussions that could lead to a Third World War if the West gets involved militarily in his invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile it seems all NATO and the West can do is threaten ineffective economic sanctions and some sabre-rattling.

This won’t deter Putin from his plans for Russia to dominate eastern Europe again.

I think the best we can hope for is that the Russian people turn against this tyrant and get rid of him themselves. The sooner this happens, the safer we will all be. Brian Walker, Portsmouth

It is becoming clear that Putin is mad. If not stopped, he could start World War Three. The threat of chemical warfare and nuclear weapons is really frightening – as is the aftermath. This man and the war he is waging must be stopped.

Dave Mellor, Warrington

There are growing fears Putin will carry out his threat and launch his nuclear weapons. This is truly worrying, not just for Ukraine, but for the world. As a boy, I lived through the Second World War and this breaks my heart. We should take his threats seriously and all political leaders need to do all they can to stop this happening.

Ray Stokes, Newcastle

■ Putin has given a clear message he will use nuclear weapons if the West stands in his way. The West therefore needs to take much tougher action. I have no doubt he will use them if he wishes. Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world, so he is well prepared to strike with deadly consequences.

Phil Morris, Cleethorpes

Many of the videos and images coming out of Ukraine are heartbreaking – families saying tearful goodbyes to those who feel compelled to join the war effort against Vladimir Putin.

Now he is talking of nuclear weapons being placed on stand-by. We just have to pray this is a bluff. If not, we could all be doomed.

Ashley Smith, March, Cambs

It has become clear from his actions that Putin, a former KGB man, has a yearning to recreate the old Soviet Union. We can only hope that as the inevitable deaths of Russian troops mount, his own country turns against him.

If he gets away with this invasion, it is likely that his next target will be the Baltic states which are NATO members. This could lead to a much wider conflict and is a truly terrifying prospect. Gordon Pilkington, Epsom, Surrey We should make it clear to the people of Russia that we do not hold them responsible for this invasion of the Ukraine and we applaud those honourable Russian people who have made a stand against it.

This war is down to Putin and his fellow ex-KGB thugs in the Kremlin – not the Russian people.

NATO and the West must declare Putin to be a war criminal and put a price on his head, while doing all we can to support the Russian people in their stand against a conflict he is pretending to carry out in their name.

Peter McGraghan, Darlington

What is wrong with the Russian people? Are they totally ignorant about what this mad, murdering, man is doing. Why did they elect such a blatant warmonger.

This man is putting the world in danger of another global war. He has no regard for human life and is prepared to murder innocent people for his own pleasure.

Something must be done quickly to stop him. When it is all over he should be arrested and charged with genocide and war crimes.
