Yours for £1million, rally driving’s ‘Mona Lisa on wheels’

-

A RALLY car forced into retirement after just two competitive outings is being sold by its owner for £1million.

The MG Metro 6R4 was built in 1986 as Austin Rover’s entry for the hair-raising Group B rally series.

However, it completed only two events before the off-road races were banned following the deaths of several drivers, co-drivers and spectators.

Austin Rover sold the “hot hatch”, that could do 0-60mph in under four seconds, to a private collector soon afterwards.

The car had been built by Williams F1 and it ended up on display at the Williams Museum in Oxfordshire.

The museum was cleared out two years ago when the Williams family sold the car racing business and the MG Metro 6R4 was returned to its owner.

David Paveley, of the North Wales Motor Racing Company, is selling the Metro on their behalf and described it as the “Mona Lisa on wheels”.

He added: “There is no other car like it out there.

“It is like a time capsule. It is immaculate. “The owner isn’t in any hurry to sell it and he wants it to go to the right person; someone who can sense that it is a real piece of motoring history, who is a fan of that era of rally driving and who wants to drive it and show it off at events.”
