Long and winding road

PILGRIMAGE: THE ROAD TO THE SCOTTISH ISLES BBC2, 9pm IT’S not all peaceful reflection and meditation on this celebrity pilgrimage to Moray on the edge of the Scottish Highlands.

This final instalment sees the group’s first proper argument, which erupts over dinner after attending a service in Latin. Tensions surface when presenter Scarlett Moffatt and Paralympic star Will Bayley feel insulted at the suggestion the service is purer or more intellectual in Latin, a subject they never studied.

“People are getting tired. You can’t go two weeks without getting annoyed by someone, it’s natural,” says Emmerdale actress Louisa Clein.

Finishing the evening with a toast, they hope arguments will be forgotten by the next morning.

The pilgrims then head off to Forres, a nearby ancient town dating back to 900AD. Heading west, they catch a ferry to the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Lewis.

In Stornoway, comedian Shazia Mirza takes the chance to pray at Britain’s northernmost mosque, taking Apprentice star Nick Hewer and Louisa with her.

Once reunited with the pilgrims, they head to the Calanais Stones, which are older than Stonehenge.

Then there’s a wet and wild walk in Glen Nevis, in the shadow of its big brother, Ben Nevis. Another ferry ride takes them to the Isle of Mull, a hop away from the tiny island of Iona and their last overnight stop.

To conclude their epic journey there’s a visit to the shrine of Columba and a walk in the hills, with the last words belonging to Nick. But there’s a chance for all to ponder this intense, occasionally godly, celebrity road trip.
