NHS ban on slave labour China goods
THE NHS is to be banned from buying goods from the Xinjiang region of China over fears they are being made by slaves.
Campaigners say thousands of Uyghur Muslims are held in labour camps.
An amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill will stop the NHS importing suspected slave-made products from anywhere.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid said it would be a “turning point” in efforts to stamp out forced labour and human trafficking.
Luke de Pulford, of antislavery charity Arise, said: “This is the most significant piece of supply chain regulation that we have.”
During the pandemic, £150million of PPE was bought from Chinese firms linked to alleged abuses.
