British bid to build biggest cable vessel
UK workers are in the running to build the world’s biggest cable-laying ship.
Earlier this week we reported British steel will be used for cables bringing wind and solar power from Morocco to Devon.
And now we can reveal an even bigger boost for industry, with domestic firms competing for the contract to build the 656ft vessel to lay the cables.
Project contractor XLCC is understood to have already held talks with British shipyards over the vessel, which will be 98ft longer than the largest existing cable layer.
Shipbuilding union chief Ian Waddell called it “a massive opportunity”.
Labour MP Kevan Jones said: “We excel in these technologies.”
