Sea King SAS hero medals to fetch £20k

THE medals of an SAS soldier killed in the Sea King helicopter tragedy during the Falklands War are tipped to sell for £20,000.

Sgt Philip “Taff” Jones, 28, was one of 20 killed when the Sea King Mk 4 crashed in the sea while ferrying elite commandos between the flagship HMS Hermes and the warship HMS Intrepid ahead of the assault on San Carlos.

Sgt Jones, of Hoddlesden, Lancs, who was in G Squadron, 22 Special Air Service, served with distinctio­n in Northern Ireland and was in Oman during Operation Storm.

Harry Blackett-Ord of Spink & Son in central London, auctioning his medals, said: “What makes it so poignant is how such a brave man was killed in an accident of fate.”
