Taking Tuesday to new emotional Depp-ths
This week’s big nightly primetime drama really exceeded all expectations.
Based on real events, it was an emotionally draining tale filled with suspense, betrayal, accusations, unexpected twists, and a star cast delivering the performance of their lives.
Unfortunately for ITV, it wasn’t (the also very good) The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe.
No, this absolutely jaw-dropping gem was hidden away on Freeview channel 89: Johnny Depp testifying in his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Or as the Hollywood remake will probably call it: Irates of the Caribbean: Captain Jack Takes A Stand.
The serious stuff is just that: Complex and for the jury to debate.
But there were also lighter insights: Nicolas Cage was responsible for Depp being an actor, the inspiration for Captain Jack was...Wile E. Coyote (well, who else?), and
Johnny has never ever, even once, seen Pirates of the Caribbean. Or, indeed, most of his films. His last three movies scraped in a combined £3.1million globally –just a fraction more than his salary for one of them.
Maybe he should forget his fear and loathing of watching himself, and treasure the chance while he can.
