FRANKIE FALLS FOR OAKS-BOUND EMILY

- BY MELISSA JONES

FRANKIE DETTORI was full of praise for Emily Upjohn as she raced into contention for the Cazoo Oaks yesterday.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained filly powered clear in the Nordoff Robbins Charlie Watts Memorial Fillies’ Novice Stakes.

At Sandown, the location for today’s National Hunt season finale, her winning distance was more akin to a race in that sphere.

The daughter of Sea The Stars made it two from two with a nine-and-half length supremacy. Bookmakers William Hill slashed her price to 7-1 for the Epsom Classic on June 3.

“I rode her the other day and thought ‘wow’,”

Dettori (below) said.“Not many horses take my breath away, but you like to see them do it in the afternoon.”

Westover is 25-1 with the same firm for the Derby after galloping to bet365 Classic Trial glory. Juddmonte’s homebred Frankel colt, trained by Ralph Beckett, pipped Cash by a short-head.

Barry Mahon, Juddmonte racing manager, said: “Ralph picked this race as a starting point some way back.”

Mostahdaf justified short odds with success in the bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes, with trainer Thady Gosden stating the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes was a possible target.
