PM becoming a pocket Putin

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ AFTER the whitewash of Sue Gray’s Partygate report, Johnson’s lying and bluster further confirm his lack of respect for the office he holds. Now he’s rewriting the Ministerial Code to suit his own agenda.

So, the monitoring of behaviour such as Priti Patel’s bullying of her staff is now transferred from the Committee on Standards to the PM.

Trump tried it in America and Putin survives on it in Russia. We’re seeing the creeping pernicious growth of a dictatorship where Johnson hands himself the ultimate power of judge and jury as he refuses to accept any responsibility for his failings.

Thankfully, opinion polls are showing the British public won’t let this happen. John Sedgwick, Tamworth, Staffs

■ So much for Boris Johnson’s apologies and humility. Now he has rewritten the Ministerial Code to remove the requirement for ministers to resign if they mislead Parliament. Johnson is moving the goalposts so when it happens again, there is no sanction. This is staggering.

The Ministerial Code also requires ministers to show integrity, objectivity, accountability, transparency, honesty and leadership. He’s now removing all of these because he can’t even spell the words, let alone demonstrate them. Astonishingly, many Tory MPs want him to remain as PM, even though most people think he should resign. He damages Britain every day he remains in office, but they think he might have another election victory in him.

Shame on them. David Bodimeade, Rayleigh, Essex

■ Boris Johnson appears to believe he is Vladimir Putin and can change rules on a whim to allow him to stay in charge. Does he believe that the British public are totally stupid, or is it just his arrogance that makes him think that he is above us? Kenneth G Rheeston, South Yardley, Birmingham

■ Having watered down the Ministerial Code, meaning ministers can break rules without having to resign, it looks as if Boris Johnson will have to be dragged out of No10, just as Donald Trump was from the White House.

I am looking forward to seeing the Daily Mirror headline, The party’s over, Prime Minister! Mindy Lee

■ How can Boris Johnson change the rules of the Ministerial Code so he can’t be brought to justice over misleading Parliament? This is totally out of order. The next rule he implements will be that he can’t be voted out of office. He is on the way to becoming a dictator.

Alan Robinson, Liverpool

■ If ever in future I get a speeding or parking ticket, I shall declare that I didn’t intend to speed, didn’t break any rules, and therefore may be excused any penalty. I might have to have my case referred to the Prime Minster who is, of course, the final arbiter of truth and honesty. Trevor Rigg, Edinburgh

■ When will the penny drop for Tory MPs to realise that Boris is a self-serving hypocrite? He obviously believes that the opinion of the majority of voters doesn’t count. He also seems to bluff his way through everything and continually comes up with ideas and schemes that attempt to take the heat off his wrongdoings.

It’s about time his MPs turned the table on him and made him stand down, not just for the sake of their party, but for the sake of this country.
