VOLUNTEERS at a Grenfell community kitchen were delighted to receive a phone call from the Duchess of Sussex to mark the fifth anniversary of the fire tragedy.

Meghan has a long-standing association with the Hubb Community Kitchen.

The group said: “Always very thoughtful, today we received a lovely voice message from the Duchess, being the five years anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, asking how we are, about our children and families, and giving us news of hers.

“Just being her beautiful, kind self.”

The Hubb Community Kitchen evolved after women affected by the devastating 2017 fire gathered to prepare food for their families and neighbours in the aftermath.

Meghan’s relationship with the kitchen began in January 2018 when she first visited. She has continued to make regular trips ever since.

She collaborated with volunteers by writing the foreword for their awardwinning charity recipe collection Together: Our Community Cookbook.

It went on to make more than £550,000 for Grenfell survivors after the Royal Foundation charity invested more than £230,000 to help the project.

The book sold 130,000 copies worldwide in its first year, with the income raised going to the Al Manaar mosque.

Meghan, who has also had video calls with kitchen volunteers, once said of the group: “A home-cooked meal from one neighbour to another, when they need it most, is what community is all about.”

Meghan was back in the UK for the Platinum Jubilee earlier this month with her husband Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and their children Archie, three, and Lilibet, one.

She made an appearance with Harry at the service of thanksgiving held to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Grenfell survivors and the bereaved at a memorial service on the fifth anniversary of the fire on Tuesday.

Kate and William were among those who observed a 72-second silence at the base of the tower in North Kensington, West London, in memory of the 72 men, women and children who died.

She asked how we were and about our children & families
