Crossings by migrants are double 2021

- BY KATIE BOYDEN

THE number of migrants braving the Channel since January has topped 11,000 – almost double the total for this time last year.

Warm weather and calm seas have encouraged more crossings this week.

The busiest day was Tuesday when 444 were brought ashore by Border Force and the RNLI after being found in the world’s busiest shipping lane.

It was the highest daily number since 562 arrived on April 14. On Thursday the figure was down to 146 in four boats.

Last year 5,911 had made the crossing by the end of June.

Analysis of Ministry of Defence data shows 341 boats have been used so far this year with an average of 32 people aboard each.
