‘Immunity for terror killers’ plan criticised
NORTHERN Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis has said a new body looking into hundreds of killings during the Troubles may only solve “one or two”.
Under a new bill, those accused of killings could get immunity from prosecution if they work with the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery.
But Mr Lewis told The House magazine he could not guarantee suspects would come forward.
He said: “These people never had any inclination to come forward before.”
Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Kyle accused Mr Lewis of giving “a legal right to immunity for murderers which trumps attempts to discover the truth”.
