Holy profits, Batman! Art sets a record

- BY JAMES PODESTA

COVER art for a Batman comic has sold for a record £1.95million.

The 1986 work by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley shows the Caped Crusader silhouetted against a bolt of lightning.

It was the cover for The Dark Knight Returns, which inspired 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale.

Miller said the lightning bolt was “a moment of inspiration” and that the cover was “a real favourite”.

Todd Hignite, vice president of Heritage Auctions based in Dallas, Texas, said the image had “defined the entire superhero genre from the 1980s to this very moment”.

The previous record for Batman art was $600,000 for a 1973 cover by Neal Adams, sold in 2019.
