KATE Bush’s Running Up That Hill has raced to the top of the charts a record 44 years after her first No 1.

The song came out in 1985 but has been embraced again after featuring in spooky Netflix hit series Stranger Things.

Kate last had a No 1 single with Wuthering Heights in 1978.

She said: “I’m overwhelmed by the scale of affection and support the song is receiving, and it’s all happening really fast, as if it’s being driven along by a kind of elemental force.

“I feel really moved by it all. Thank you so very much for making the song a No 1 in such an unexpected way.”

It means Kate has beaten the record for longest-ever gap between No 1 singles in official chart history. Tom Jones held the record previously with a 42-year gap between Green, Green Grass of Home and (Barry) Islands in the Stream.

Kate also claims the record of

longest time taken for a single to reach No 1, and becomes the oldest female artist to top the chart at 63 years and 11 months.

She replaces Cher, 52 when Believe hit the top spot in 1998.

Kate praised the creators of Stranger Things, saying: “The Duffer Brothers have touched people’s hearts at a time that’s incredibly difficult for everyone, especially younger people.”
