The first reviews of Lightyear were released... and the buzz was great. But it’s not the Buzz we know. Because this Toy Story spin-off is the real-life version of the pretend movie about the “real Buzz Lightyear” (voiced by Avengers’ Chris Evans), which Toy Story’s Andy watched to make him want the Buzz Lightyear toy, voiced by Tim Allen, that we first met in the 1995 original.
Or, to put in crystal-clear geek speak: Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear is the Palitoy Luke Skywalker toy to Lightyear’s Star Wars.*
Have fun explaining it to your four-year-olds, mums and dads.
There was more blurring between fiction and reality when Netflix then issued an open casting call for Squid Game: The Challenge, a real game show where 456 real contestants battle it out for a real £3.7million jackpot by playing the real physical games from the hit horror drama.
(You know, the one where players get shot if they lose).
It’s only about halfway down the ad that it clarifies a key fact: “The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home emptyhanded.”
They probably should have opened with that. Only the last one standing gets the cash.
But, as a plus-size, muscle-poor, gym-phobic on the wrong side of 35, let’s face it: the odds of me winning are far, far, far, far, far, far... BETTER... than me winning Love Island.
