Nicked bees make beeline for old home

- BY LAUREN BEAVIS

THOUSANDS of bees stolen from a country estate are returning home by themselves.

Around 400,000 were taken in five hives – and it is hoped the remaining 320,000 will also fly back.

Assistant beekeeper Kathrin Barnes said: “There are so many it indicates they are nearby. If bees are moved less than a mile they go to where they were before, it’s our hope.”

The hives were taken between 6pm on June 11 and 6am on June 12 from Tresillian House in St Newlyn East, Cornwall.

Head beekeeper Guy Barnes said the theft left him “stressed and emotional”. He said each hive contained 80,000 bees.

Mr Barnes added: “My gut feeling is it’s another keeper. You need to know what time to get them, have multiple people, and have a vehicle big enough

to transport them.”
