LOVE has lasted three generations for Ruth and Fred Stanford.

The couple, both 96, married on June 14, 1947, the year the Queen wed.

Asked of the secret behind 75 years of marriage, Ruth confessed: “I have not got a clue. It seems as though Fred has been around for ever.”

They first met at primary school in Guildford, Surrey, and Fred went on to join the RAF and flew Lancaster bombers. He served as Squadron Leader with 52 Squadron and 72 Squadron, and his service took the family to the Far East. He finally retired from the RAF at 65. The couple, who live at Barchester White Lodge Care Home, in Swindon, Wilts, had a card from the Queen, a bouquet from Royal Wootton Bassett mayor Pat Farrow and a gift from Master Air Crew Brian Kayll and Sgt Isla Cudlipp, based at RAF Brize Norton. Their daughter, Christine, said: “They looked after us well.”
