A LOLLY GOOD DISPLAY FROM PENISTON

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

RYAN PENISTON’S hot streak ended on the warmest day of the year – but he has the compensation of banking lots of lolly in the richest week of his life.

The British No.7, who lost to Serb Filip Krajinovic 4-6 6-3 6-3 yesterday, earned £50,000 for reaching the quarter-finals at the cinch Championships at Queen’s Club. Add in the guaranteed £50,000 for the Wimbledon wildcard which he was awarded this week, the 26-year-old is close to reaching his career earnings of £131,324. “It’s a lot of money for someone like myself who has been playing on a future tour a couple of years ago to now the Challengers,” he said. “I am just going to just reinvest it in myself and get better.” The Manchester United fan, who beat top seed Casper Ruud on his ATP main draw debut in the first round, will also move up 35 places in the rankings to 145 in the world.

“The next step for me is the top 100,” said Peniston. “I think I can definitely do it.” World No.48 Krajinovic, who will meet Marin Cilic in the semi-finals today, said: “Ryan played really well – first set and a half he was the better player. “He is going to be really good.” Defending champion Matteo Berrettini, who beat Andy Murray in the final in Stuttgart last weekend, continued his winning streak by beating American Tommy Paul 6-4 6-2 to set up a last-four meeting with Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp.

British singles interest is also over at the Rothesay Classic Birmingham as Katie Boulter lost 6-4 6-1 to former world No.1 Simona Halep in just her second event back from injury.

“It is a huge step forward for me,” said the British No.4. “I have played some of my best tennis.”
