Brilliance of Buttler fires up a runs record

- BY GIDEON BROOKS

JOS BUTTLER said big-hitting England will keep trying to break the 500 mark after falling just short in their thumping win over Holland. The wicketkeeper-batsman was the star of an astonishing world record-breaking display, smashing a 70-ball 162 in a mammoth 498. But the England star maintained they will keep trying to push to new heights

over the course of the next two games against Holland. Asked whether he was disappointed not to hit 500, Buttler said: “I don’t think disappointment is the right word. We’ve come close once before as well.

“But the message stays the same for the team. We keep trying to push the boundaries, we keep trying to take the game forward. I thought everyone who played here, and with the ball as well, really stuck to that.”

In an eye-catching start to Matthew Mott’s tenure as their new white-ball coach, Buttler was one of three centurions for the first time for England in a one-day international with Dawid Malan (125) and Phil Salt (122).

Liam Livingstone (right) also posted the fastest 50 for England in 17 balls as he ended unbeaten with a rapid 66.

England’s total eclipsed the 481-6 they made against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018 as 26 sixes rained down on the uncovered stands in Amstelveen.

England cruised to a 232-run win and captain Eoin Morgan said: “Jos is in a world of his own.

“It’s why he’s the best whiteball player in the world.”
