Javid mission to tackle the suicide issue

- BY MARTIN BAGOT Health Editor

SAJID Javid has launched a “deeply personal” mental health drive following the suicide of his elder brother.

The Health Secretary has announced a National Suicide Prevention Plan and alluded to the death of Tariq Javid in 2018.

The supermarket chain boss, 51, died at a hotel in West Sussex, after writing a note to his partner.

The minister has met with bereaved families and support organisations, such as charities Papyrus UK and James’ Place.

He said: “This is something deeply personal to me – there are too many families that are left incomplete. We must treat suicides with the urgency we treat any major killer.

“The Online Safety Bill gives us an opportunity to tackle this issue.”
