Welsh rugby hero Benny is laid to rest
PHIL Bennett was described as “a great gentleman and great rugby player” at his remembrance service yesterday.
The former Wales and British Lions captain died earlier this month aged 73.
His cortege had a starstudded 40-strong guard of honour.
Ex-Wales skipper Delme Thomas gave a eulogy to the ace, nicknamed Benny.
Former teammates paying respects included Sir Gareth Edwards and Gerald Davies, the Welsh Rugby Union president.
In a filmed tribute, New Zealand’s 1972 captain Ian Kirkpatrick, said: “He had the skills and ability to produce greatness.”
The service, in Llanelli, was followed by a funeral in Felinfoel, Bennett’s home village.
