Cry me a river Monday
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Reunited promised a 2022 refresh of the living-off-the-land cookery show.
And at first, its return after 10 years sounded hopeful as Hugh declared: “We have an extra level of responsibility for the natural world this time round.”
Unfortunately though, that “natural world” includes bees but doesn’t completely include the likes of Bambi, Bugs Bunny and Ermintrude. For while eco-warrior Hugh’s been cutting his own (ethical) meat intake, he’s still got recipes to get the casts of Chicken Run and Babe really fired up.
The website states: “He still eats meat, but most comes from animals he rears himself, and those reared locally by farms that have the highest animal welfare standards.”
Don’t get me wrong, it’s way, way better than the alternative.
But in human terms... That’s like Hannibal Lecter pencilling me in for Friday Night Dinner – but treating me to an all-inclusive luxury spa break beforehand. Yeah, the spa’s nicer than no spa.
But come Friday, he’s still going to be needing that bottle of sweet Chianti... because I’ll still be incredibly bitter.
