THE FIRST DAY!

O’Brien’s filly ready to defy the stats in the Irish Derby

-

BANK on some more girl power as TUESDAY has the zig-a-zig-ah to be a charttopper in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (3.45).

Hot on the heels of Hollie Doyle landing the first Classic win by a female jockey, Aidan O’Brien’s Oaks heroine aims to defy the stats and gain the No1 spot at the Curragh.

No filly has thwarted the colts since 1994, but trainer Aidan O’Brien (right), who has won the Irish Derby 14 times, supplemented his Epsom ace for today’s race and can set the record straight.

A late foal, it was Tuesday’s third birthday when she won the Oaks by a short head from Emily Upjohn. The runner-up lost many lengths when stumbling at the start, but that should not underplay Ryan Moore’s mastery, using Tuesday’s pace for a sweeping move with two furlongs to run.

The 2016 heroine Minding’s sister clearly relished the mile-and-a-half trip, as the pair finished clear of Doyle’s subsequent French star Nashwa.

Rated 117, 1lb ahead of unlucky-in-running Derby third Westover – and chief market rival – the fillies’ allowance can give Tuesday a vital edge.

LANEQASH can get his revenge on Pogo for his nose defeat in the John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock last month by taking Newmarket’s House Of Cavani Menswear Criterion Stakes (3.15).

On 3lb better terms and with that outing under his belt, the Roger Varian-trained gelding should turn the tables on the winner.

On the same card, UNIVERSAL ORDER could reign again in the Listed House Of Cavani Menswear Fred Archer

Stakes (2.40). Two years on from his success in this race, David Simcock’s charge retains his old ability based on his recent second to Contact at Haydock.

Frankie Dettori’s only ride, LEZOO, is fancied to take the Listed Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies’ Stakes (2.05).

She collared a more experienced runner on debut and her market position suggests that came as a surprise.

At Newcastle, RAVENS ARK reunites with Tom Marquand in the JenningsBet Northumberland Vase (2.55). The pair teamed up at Lingfield in May for a length score from two subsequent winners and there is more to come at this longer trip.

Marquand has strong claims of a double with SENSE OF DUTY in the Group 3 Pertemps Network Chipchase Stakes (2.25).

The filly defeated subsequent Commonwealth Cup third Flotus at Haydock last month, while third-placed Benefit went on to scoop a Listed event.

William Haggas trained the second there, which gives him a gauge of his filly’s talents – and she is a long way from the bottom of the barrel.

Hooded sprinter RAATEA is each-way value in the Pertemps Network Handicap (1.50).

He has gone close off marks of 91 and 89 since his last win, so 88 gives room to manoeuvre.
