Top medic: ‘Exhausted doctors will walk away’

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

DOCTORS’ morale is at breaking point with nearly half suffering depression, anxiety or burnout, the Government will be warned.

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, The British Medical Association’s most senior doctor, will tell its conference “goodwill” has all but run out.

He will say it is only this that has kept the NHS from collapse for years.

Dr Nagpaul will add that “despite the Government failing in their duty to care for us, we have unstintingly fulfilled our duty of care for our patients.”

INSULT

He will also touch on Partygate and address claims from MPs who suggested healthcare staff also partied after hours.

He will say “it’s an absolute insult that as we topped up intravenous fluids, ministers and the Prime Minister merrily topped up their glasses in defiance of rules they themselves set.”

Dr Nagpaul will warn ministers that “doctors are utterly exhausted, with 40% suffering depression, anxiety or burnout”.

He concludes: “You cannot exploit a well of goodwill which has totally run dry. Doctors will, and are, walking away.”

Unison, the biggest union, last week indicated half a million NHS workers may strike if their pay offer falls short of inflation.
